Apartment Advice - My husband is based in...

I was thinking probably going to San Diego. Does anyone know of any good apartments near there? perferably under or close to $1000. I was really hoping to be within 20 mins of the Coronado Naval Base? Everything I'm finding has reviews of cockroaches! Yuk.
