Pretty Bad Neighborhood, Nice Looking Place Though

The apartment itself looked very nice when we toured it, hardwood floors throughout, bedrooms were on the smallish size, but the living room/dining room areas where decent sized. The kitchen was big but with a lot of wasted space, and very minimal counter tops. If you need to plug in anything electronic there are several problems with this-- The bedrooms each have one outlet, the kitchen had 2 usable outlets, the bathroom had none, the dining room had none, and the living room had 2. So power strips were a necessity.

The area is pretty bad. The only parking is on street, and several times our cars got vandalized. Troy has a knack for towing cars every week as well. The neighbors directly to either side were not bad people, very nice in fact. However the rest of the area has people that like to throw trash in the road, make noise to all hours of the night and generally be annoying. There was a stabbing a few doors down from the apartment, and multiple times the road to our apartment was blocked off due to the police investigating something. We had packages stolen from the door step, and found a note on the door telling us to call Troy PD about it, Troy PD never got back to us.

In the winter the apartment would be freezing despite the heaters (of which there are only two for the entire apartment none in the bedrooms). The gas/electric bill in the winter got as high as $380/month. In the summer it was around $150. The walls and ceilings have 0 insulation, and the "new" windows are installed improperly, and therefore leak cold air during the winter.

The antiquated gas stove probably should be replaced, it used an extreme amount of gas at all times due to the pilot lights, and you had to light the oven each time with a lighter. Several times we would awaken in the morning to the smell of natural gas since the pilots all blew out due to the drafts in the apartment.

Several things broke in the apartment, light fixtures, faucets, etc. We reported them to the landlord, only to have him drop of the parts and ask if we could fix them. Not a bad deal, but could have been better.

The landlords overall were decent. It was kinda a pain getting them the rent check. We liked to drive and deliver it, but often times they were not home, and they had actual insulation on their doors so we couldn't slip it under the door.

The second floor had no washer/dryer, although we were told hookups would be put in, they never were. The first floor apartment did have them, so if you made friends with them it was no big deal.

Overall, would I live there again? No. It was overpriced (considering cost of utilities), in a bad area (downtown Troy), and not worth it.
