I moved here from a more expensive unit across town to save money (almost $200 less a month compared to the prior apartment). Although it is a bit smaller, I thought it would be worth it. I was wrong.
The building I live in, which I believe is made up single bedroom apartments only, is set up so that if one person's smoke alarm goes off, the entire building must be evacuated. This deafening, central alarm has gone off at all hours of the day and night, at a minimum of 2-3 times a month, ever since I have lived here. It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1/2 hr to be able to enter the building again. I understand that the type of the building makes evacuation a necessity, but this is ridiculous.
One of the main reasons for these false alarms is steam build-up from the shower. My bathroom's vent is impossible to open or close, and has no motor (and there is no window), so the steam and mildew are constant concerns.
The maintenance staff have entered my apartment without permission multiple times. The first time was after I first moved in, when I checked (clearly) "No Permission to Enter," as the only things that were amiss were minor and unchanging. The other day, the maintenance crew demanded to come in to do pest control, even though they never gave the mandatory 24-hour notice. Now, I've received a curt, finger-wagging note in the door telling me that SOMEBODY's got pets (not allowed), so throughout the entire month of January, there will be random searches of apartments for animals.
The young man who works in the office lives upstairs from me, although no one ever said anything about spies on the grounds. He walks around outside, policing the picnic tables after dark, staring people down in the halls, acting as the live-in noise control. As a deputy sheriff, apparently he feels that he has the authority to reach right into people's personal lives and arrange them to his taste, even off the clock.
These are the primary issues I have with this apartment, although I could go on and on about the shortcomings of this complex.
