Mostly Satisfied...Until I Got The Final Bill...

I lived at Britton Woods for a number of years and had few problems. Toward the end, I did have some neighbor issues, and by the time I left, half of my building was vacant. I had to call the cops a total of four times in the last six months due to rowdy neighbors partying into the night, one of which retaliated by throwing snowballs at my door for about half an hour until I threatened to call the cops again. Mature, eh? I emailed the rental office about it and got no response - my primary motive in moving out, the nail in the coffin, was that incident and they didn't care.

Anyway, the apartments were slightly overpriced, though cute with a nice layout - not your typical cookie cutter like most Triangle units. Despite what they tell you, there are cheaper apartments in the vicinity with more space for less rent. One year, I even had to bargain for a new dishwasher when I re-signed my lease, despite my complaints that it was incredibly noisy (to the point that I couldn't watch TV while it was on or run it past 8pm without worrying about the neighbors complaining). I shouldn't have had to bargain for that - it should have been a courtesy by the management that I have a fully functional appliance.

My fireplace quit working after the first year, and after multiple requests and one call to the gas company about a leak late one Sunday night, I stopped trying to even use it.

The biggest disappointment, however, was the bill that I recieved when I moved out. I was told, prior to leaving, that they would do a pre and post move out inspection. When they did the pre inspection, I was given no notice whatsoever that I would end up with a $500 bill after I left. If I had known that they would charge me $200 for cleaning the carpets, I would have paid MUCH LESS to have them done myself. They weren't even that damaged - just two lines where the couches sat for four years (found out it was smoke damage, by the way, caused by their faulty fireplace). They charged me over $100 for painting the walls due to supposed smoke damage (small spot in bathroom from a candle, spot wasn't even six inches long and that cost $100??), $25 for cleaning out the fridge (nevermind that I cleaned the entire inside/outside with Clorox wipes and left it spotless). The only cost that I feel was legit was the small amount charged because I forgot to clean out my oven.

They took my entire $150 deposit and charged me an additional $360 on top of it, which I now have on my credit report because I can't afford to pay it right now. I checked around and found out that Britton Woods is having an issue with maintaining tenants, and I think the other residents I've talked to are right...they are trying to get as much out of us as possible because they have too many empty units. I thought that I had a good relationship with management, especially Barb, but after getting that bill, I realize that they don't really care about the tenants who did stay and didn't cause problems. Not to mention, if I had re-signed my lease, my rent would have gone up $30 and for what? They certainly weren't going to make that $30 worth it.

I now live in twice the space in a quiet neighborhood and only pay an additional $60 a month - but I also don't have to pay water, which averaged me about $27 a month (an increase of about $8 when they went to the system where they totaled up usage for the whole building and then divided it by the number of tenants in a unit - those living alone got screwed and all of our water bills went up...I asked around). I searched for almost a year in different apartments not only in Dublin, but also Worthington and the nicer parts of Westerville. Britton Woods is not competitive in their pricing, and they will overcharge you for clean-up after you leave. I mean, honestly, carpet cleaning? My parents had their 2000 square foot house cleaned, with stain treatment, for almost half the cost of what they charged me for a one bedroom apartment.

Robbery.
