Dont Bother, It's Not Worth Your Sanity

I was scheduled to move in April 06, but week after week I was called and told my apartment wasn't ready yet. I finally got a call the first week of June stating they were sorry for the delay, but that it was finally ready for me to move in. I went down and signed the papers and then realized that they'd switched apartments on me. They said I could switch back to the one I was supposed to be renting, but I'd have to pay early lease termination fees and pay a new deposit. I decided I'd just keep the place and move out at the end of the lease. So I went down and did the move-in inspection and found that the roof inside the microwave was peeling off, 3 or 4 dozen dead cockroaches were in the overhead kitchen light, living cockroaches were everywhere else, light bulbs were burnt out (one was broken with the bottom half still screwed in the socket), the ceiling fan only had one speed (on and off, the pull chain for High/Med/Low didn't work), screws and nails were carpeted over (yes, the genius’s put carpet over nails, tacks, and screws), so walking bare foot was not an option, the shower didn't have any cold water, the lower rack of the dish washer didn't have any wheels, the medicine cabinet didn't have any shelves, the ceiling had a hole in it & the blinds had significant gaps in them. I marked it all down on my inspection form and returned to the office. I went in and said I had my inspection form and the place was completely unacceptable. They said they were sorry and would let Maintenance know, but that the Maintenance guy was busy and probably wouldn't get around to fixing anything for at least a week. I called every week for about two months and got a few things fixed, but then the repairs stopped and nothing else was ever fixed. Then I made the mistake of telling them that I was going to have my dog living with me. I paid the Pet Deposit and started paying pet rent only to be told when I moved out that it wasn’t actually a pet deposit, it was just a fee, and the pet rent was just a monthly fee. So if you have pets, be ready to kiss your money good bye. I ended up paying $750 just in “fees” because I owned a pet. None of it goes to repairs should the pet damage anything. Then the rent kept going up. I called and asked them why and they said that it’s for maintenance costs, but at the same time, they also dumped the remaining utilities that they had been paying in my lap as well. So the cost to live there went up, but they provided even less. If you add that to all the other things they charge you for, for no other reason than because they can, they are padding their pockets very nicely. While I was there, two people were found dead in their apt. Management casually said “It’s Memphis, nobody’s safe.” The trinity road gates were complete taken out twice and were significantly disabled a couple dozen times by the drunks and drug addicts that live there. There’s one woman that goes around writing down license plate numbers and reports people for absolutely nothing. I caught her writing mine down and she said I was driving recklessly. The reality is she lets her kids (I’d say, based off looks, that they range in age, somewhere from 6 to 14) do whatever they want and if interact in any way with them, they’ll make up a story to tell the cops. All I had done was tap my horn because her kids were playing in the middle of the road and weren’t paying any attention to traffic. This was during rush hour, and the two cars in front of me almost hit them because they ran out in front of them. I later found out she called the cops and told them that I’d tried to run her kids over. The cops know about her and told me there’s nothing they can do. And finally, in the last two months, there have been a half dozen or so home invasions and a couple rapes, to which the apt management casually says, “It’s Memphis, nobody’s safe.”
