Apartment Reviews for The Gateway At Tempe
Don't fall for its fake charm.

Living in the dorms last year I was so excited to get into an apartment. I toured Gateway no less than 3 times and was so excited, I even had my parents fly out to sign my lease. After they lied and told me that the first month would be prorated, and only let us in one day before classes started I got my key. When I opened the door, you could say i was very less than pleased. I have a 3x2 with a private bathroom. My bathroom had not been cleaned from the previous tenant. How do I know this? there were still bobby pins on the ground plus one of the girls reluctantly renewed and she said she was there all summer and they didn't clean the place once. Which is bull because the whole reason we weren't allowed to move in on the first was so they could clean. The quality of everything in the apartment is poor, my desk is being held up by bricks, my drawers break every week, the furniture is a joke. Maintenance? Yeah right, it takes months to get an easy request met. In august, no air conditioner? Oh they said it was just because the sun was out. Plus they get free rent and have like 7 people living in their apartment. Our microwave broke, so they finally brought us a different one, that doesn't work, but didn't feel the need to take the other one away.
The walls are so thin my neighbors like to play music loud all night long and the stupid rent a cops do nothing to all of the underage drinking, most of the time either funded by or with the CAs who don't deserve free rent. Speaking of CAs, the office staff is highly incompetent, I've asked them for very simple things, like giving me a code for the gate. He disappears into the back and returns maybe 30 minutes later? and gives me a code, to some random persons cellphone. Every time you ask them to do something, if you can find anybody in the office, they just disappear into the back and don't actually do anything.
Instead of training employees or improving the shoddy apartments, they spend all their money on pool parties and gift cards to hand out to people wearing green shirts on tuesday. Really? Plus, the yard staff likes to do their work very early in the morning, and although I appreciate the fact that landscaping is the only thing gateway does right, they shouldn't start it before 8 am when the walls are thin and wake everybody up.
They also advertise their "Roommate Matching" program, which is a complete bust. I am an asthmatic so I said no smoking. Got a roommate that smokes. If you say you want people that clean or match you on the stupid short questionnaire, they don't really care they just put you with anybody they feel like. Plus you don't even get to find out your rommates until like a few days before move-in. Their move-in deal has to be illegal. Plus they tried to raise my rent, while i'm still under lease. Really? The whole point of a lease is to lock in a price. It isn't a difficult concept.
Everybody at gateway is so inconsiderate and rude. Incompetence doesn't even begin to describe the staff that do nothing to live for free except for party with minors. DO yourself a favor and don't sign. Now I have to go find a new apartment. I hate it here.

From my experience, I've had roommates come and go. The Gateway management sent me a note letting me know that a new roommate is moving in and that I need to clean the common rooms. A few days later they send in a couple of mexican ladies to clean the tub, the toilets, the kitchen, even the fridge, then a professional carpet cleaner comes deep cleans the carpet. There were some stains in that toilet bowl that I could not get out, but that lady made bowl look like brand new.
When I moved into my place, the carpets and furniture was new, the new management have spent millions remodeling all the units. The earlier management left the place looking like a dump.
I did have a lot of things break on me but they would come and fix it sometimes the next day, sometimes it took them a few days, but everything got fixed. The Gateway has over 900 units, and they get very busy.
About the loud music, I've been to different parties around the Gateway and the Security always comes to tell people to go inside and keep the noise down. The Gateway used to be famous for big parties, but the new management has cracked down a lot on this. During one semester every party that I was going to got shut down. These days, people keep it low key with what they call kick backs. Security will allow people to party but at a certain time they start cracking down on the noise.
In my experience, there are always one to three staff in the front office ready to welcome new residence, and the main lady is the only one in the back office because there is only two chairs, and she sits on one of those chairs. Out of the many times I've been in there they have always been pleasant. There has only been a few instances where I felt like the person didn't care about what I had to say, and that person probably didn't. But everyone has their bad days, and every place has their good employees and bad ones.
About roommate Matching, I did get a guy that smoked a lot of weed, didn't pay rent, and left a turd on the toilet floor before he moved out. I requested to have foreign students that were quit, and I did get a couple of chinese guys, but I also got someone from Alaska. I think that they will try their best to match you up but if no one is a match for you then they will just fill someone in.
