Apartment Reviews for Miller & Desatnik - Los Angeles

I lived at a M&D apartment for 2007-2008, then moved to another of their apartments in another part of LA for 2008-present. For our first apartment, we got our full deposit back (appropriately); I had been concerned about this since I had heard LA apartment owners weren't always good about giving back the proper amount.

Safety will depend on the location you rent from but in both rental locations we felt safe. In both places, we had/have a door lock and a dead bolt. In the first place, we had two entrances (front/back) and both doors had these two locks.

Parking depends on the apartment. Some come with parking at no additional cost while others have parking at a (high) cost.

Appearance & condition: what you see is basically what you get, at least from my limited experience. One thing to watch out for is that some units don't have a fridge (!), which means you must spend an extra $500 to get one and then deal with hauling it to/from your apartment when you move in/out.

Office staff: I've had little experience with them but they've been polite and helpful when I have stopped in.

Maintenance: very good. Fixed leaky faucet very soon after reported.

Noise level: In our first apartment, we lived on a busy road, so that was obviously noisy (which we anticipated and cannot count against M&D). In our second location, we have loud neighbors who we have repeatedly reported for blasting music and yelling (partying) between 1am and 4am. We know our reporting resulted in them getting a warning letter but subsequent reports for this recurring problem do not appear to have much effect (M&D seem to have no teeth on this issue). This particular M&D property has a landlord, who tends to make no effort to resolve the issue despite our complaints. We have to call the main office to actually have anything done, i.e. for M&D to send them a formal letter for a slap on the wrist.

Overall, I would recommend renting from M&D. If you don't have noisy neighbors, you will probably be quite happy; regrettably, this is impossible to know prior to moving in unless you can talk to other tenants, which I will do from now onward when I look for apartments.
