I lived in one of the "garden homes" so my review is based upon that. I never lived in a tower, so cannot attest to those apartments.

The garden homes were built in the 40s and are not really "homes". Think military-style barracks where everyone has their own exterior door. Also, my apartment had many original features (i.e. windows, bathroom tile, sink, tub). The kitchen was updated nicely and quite functional for a single man. Don't expect to fix many holiday feasts, though, as counter space is limited.

Noise was never a problem in my apartment. I lived around many retirees, though. Landscaping and appearance were pleasant. I always felt safe in the park even late at night. I never had one disagreeable encounter with staff/maintenance/security.

Major areas of concern to be aware when making an (educated) decision:
Many amenities are additional cost on top of your rent. This means parking, pool and gym are extra costs.

Parking is first-come-first-serve unless you really want to go the extra mile and pay for reserved parking. If you work late hours, this may mean you have to park far away from where you live.

If you're looking for pet-friendly rentals, look again. Pet rent for dogs is $150/mo, which is the highest I've seen for apartments in this rent range. Save some money and look elsewhere.

If you freak out because of the occasional weird-looking bug, then you may want to look for a newer place. I've seen cockroaches that probably lived when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

And lastly, some apartments don't have air conditioning. Most days were fine with opening the windows and letting fans blow, but occasionally it would get extremely hot and miserable. And these 1940 brick buildings do an excellent job of holding on to the heat long after the sun goes down.

Park La Brea is a Joke dont let the views fool you. The security they have here (Sky Security) does nothing. This place is over run by a group of unruly skateboarders that do what they want from fight in the streets around Alandele Circle to throwing stones at cars going by. I have even seen them throw basketballs off from the top of the buildings, complained and told i have to prove it somehow before they can do anything. All this has been reported to Park La Brea security and nothing has been done. A guest staying with me was robbed in the middle of the day inside this gated community and it took security 20 min to respond. I have been stuck in the elevator for 45 min before it started running again. Neighbors have had their locked storage rooms broken into and all their items looted. STAY AWAY.....

Okay, I'd say evetything's pretty much in convenient distance, even the Grove mall. I think the neighbor is safe too. The only things I dislike over here is the sound blocking, and interior facility. Almost once in couple days or few, I hear engine running to cut the trees/plants(if you're sleep lover, I dont recommend here unless you choose to live in the tall tower) and at night you cannot laugh out loud when hanging w/ friends at home during holiday season(can even hear neighbor when I am sleeping on the 2nd floor). At night after 9pm, its SO HARD to get a parking lot though it depends on what day it is(or you may park far enuf).

Okay... where do I start.... Apts are fine, parking is fine(I live in a town home). However, I am at odds with the management, I have never experienced such an incompetent concentration of underachievers. I understand being a leasing agent is a low skill position but if it's your job, do it to the best of your ability. To be more specific, I believe her name is Laural, what a piece of work, not only is she incompetent and unpleasant, she is seriously unattractive. One would think, given her beastly appearance she would have developed an engaging personality and not to mention a work ethic. I've experienced better customer service at the DMV! If I am not mistaking, PLB is a publicly traded firm. I am certain the shareholders not approve of current managements practices. PLB is a nice place to live it's a shame the front office is so unprofessional.

I have been very happy the five years I have lived here. It's quiet, clean, great amenities and I feel at home and I like the fact that I am close to work!!! I highly recommend this area and this community.
