Some rooms are nice with new appliances, others are not. Hard to call it gated... the walk-in gate is never locked and the drive-in gates don't work half the time.
I don't know which manager the other reviewer dealt with, but Pam's a real bitch. And yes, they will take most all of your deposit regardless of the condition of your apartment.
