Perkins Property Hates Renters

At first I was in love with it--it's in a quiet neighborhood, a beautiful old building w/ nice details and wood floors. It didn't take long to find out that all the tenants in the building, and in other buildings owned by this company, hate their landlord. The apartments are infested w/ ants and roaches and they refuse to do anything about it; they say it's part of living in a lush landscape and to "learn to deal with it." Rents for 1br started at 1050, went up to 1250 the following year, and then they wanted 1300 for the next. After talking to other tenants, turns out they were charging everyone a different amt. The people who had been there longest (2 yrs) had been charged the most; go figure. They lived (may still) on a ground floor with all windows facing ten feet away from a house. Keep in mind that this is for a small 1br and that you will have ants crawling up your legs while trying to cook in your kitchen, ants crawling all over you while trying to relax and watch television, no matter how spotless you keep your apartment, no matter how many traps you put all overe your house. Their leases are 35 pages long. They attempt to charge you for everything. One person was told they would be charged a daily fee for some garbage that someone else had placed beside their outer window. That's not even legal. There are parking spots for one person per apartment and the landlord calls the parking authority on anyone who parks over two hrs in the only other available parking spots in front of the building. This is a residentail area and there are no other places to park. Tenants are routinely charged "late fees" for all rents received after the 1st, and given written 3 day eviction notices--this includes days when the 1st or the 30-31st fall on a Sunday or holiday when mail is not collected. The security deposit is huge, 1st and last, and no one I have ever talked from any of their apartments has ever gotten even half of theirs back. They charge for things already in bad repair and even make things up, like "filthy closet shelves." This from someone who never even used said closet. There is no list for how much they charge for repairs or cleanup once someone moves out, so they can basically charge whatever they want. They make it difficult to arrange walk-throughs, and try whenever possible to avoid them altogether. Their expensive, coin-op washing machines have settings for hot and warm water, but the hot water is cut off. When confronted with this, they claimed they did it because "too many people complained that their laundry was shrinking." This is of course totally made up. One of their buildings regularly floods, but they won't mention this when showing it to prospective renters. They try to trap people in their apartments by making it as inconvenient as possible to move out--they require 2 months notice by certified mail or forfeit your entire security deposit. They tried to tell me I missed my 2 months notice by three days, therefore would lose my deposit, but luckily I saved my slip from the post office. Basically, Perkins Property treats their tenants with a total lack of respect, even contempt, and they do whatever thay can get away with within the confines of the law. This includes concealing rent increases after a person has agreed to stay anotherr year and has already passed the required 2 month notice they would have to give in order to move out w/o losing their huge deposit. People have gone weeks with broken toilets and broken air conditioners, and when they do finally come, they love to talk a lot of dirt about all their other tenants. It's like they think they're in Feudal Europe and they're lording over their little peasants. I've rented for several years, and have never had such a bad rental experience. Perkins Property treats its tenants like dirt. When they do crummy things they like to say "it's just business" like that's some kind of excuse. It's BAD business. No one has to treat the people who pay their bills for them like that. Last I heard, a bunch of their apartments were sitting empty. There's a good reason for that. Word has gotten around. No one wants to deal with them.
