Deceptive Business Practices/Poor Property Manager

Years at this apartment: 2005-2005

I moved into Arbor Gates in February of 2005. I was enticed by the newly renovated apartment, new gym being built and friendly office staff.

Three months later I have decided to buy a house. This apartment life is no longer for me, the renovations were not nearly what I had expected, the walls are very thin and you can see light under your front door. Not a good sign of quality workmanship.

I read over my lease and the penalties that would be associated with breaking my lease as I was not trying to deceive or get out of my legal obligations. As a part of my contract with the new house the seller was going to pay the fees associated with breaking my lease. After going over all the information that the leasing office provided me, I came up with a dollar amount that I would owe Arbor Gates. It also needs to be known that this was all conducted on Saturday evening, there was no associates in the office to consult with at this time.

The following week, I called the leasing office and told them of my intentions to vacate in 60 days and asked to have the final fee's faxed to me. There was an additional $1400 in fees assessed to my final bill. When asked about them, I was told there was an addendum to the lease that I was not given a copy of, but had signed. When I asked them why I was not given a copy of the addendum, I was told by the "Apartment Manager" Belinda that they are not legally obligated to do that.

Legally, maybe they aren't obligated (I'm still checking into that), but morally why would you not want to give your tennants (YOUR CUSTOMERS, THE PEOPLE THAT PAY YOUR BILLS AND SALARIES) all the information when they request it. To me that is just deceptive and shady business practices. Belinda was unhelpful and unwilling to listen, her only comment was "we will have to agree to disagree" and we should have known what we signed regardless if we had a copy of it or not.

Let's be realistic here, we all know how many pieces of paper are put in front of our face and told to initial and sign. Nobody can remember what was signed month's later that is why we requested copies.

Regardless, the fees are going to be paid. We never intended to get out of the fees we just don't understand why we were not given all the information when we asked for it months ago so that we could have put the accurate dollar amount on our contract for our new house.

Please bewarned if you lease here, they are very shady, unprofessional and deceptive. The apartments are renovated but the looks are very deceiving. The parking is awful and you can hear your neighbors TV at low volumes through the wall's. Ask the leasing office for a copy of every piece of paper you sign. Don't let them give you just your lease (that is apparently all they are obligated to do). And last of all DO NOT DEAL WITH BELINDA IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO. I honestly don't know how this individual can call herself a professional manager. I don't know how anybody can deceive their clients and then sleep at night thinking they did a good job.

I hope this information is useful to your decission making process. We only stayed at this complex for 3 months out of our 12 month lease and we had to get out if that tells you anything.
