GENERAL WARNING: Please, please, please, I beg of you, for your own sanity, do not rent from MAC Property Management.
It would be reason enough for me to try and dissuade anyone from renting with MAC based on the fact that their apartments are significantly overpriced based on location and quality, but my main qualm with MAC is the utter lack of customer service, competence, and professionalism that renter's receive from their residential services office (RSO). My roommate and I have had several problems with multiple employees in the RSO, and now feel, as a matter of principle, that it is our duty to warn others.
On two separate occasions the RSO has "lost" rent checks that I personally deposited in the drop box. The fist time it happened I didn't think much of it, and wrote a replacement check. However, when it happened a second time my roommate and I decided to ask a few questions. We meet with a member of their accounting staff(about a week and a half after putting the checks in the drop box), and were told bluntly that I must have been lying about dropping off the checks because they had no record of receiving them, and they had "never lost a rent check." Furthermore, the person we spoke with assured us that the checks could not have been lost because she personally was the only one who pulled checks from the drop box, and she had no record of them. Upset with the tone of the conversation, but with no other option, my roommate and I wrote new checks, and put stop payments on the original "lost" checks (at our own expense). About a week later we found that not only did they cash the replacement checks, but they also tried to cash the original rent checks, the very ones they told us they had no record of. And to add insult to injury they had the nerve to assess a $50 return check fee to our rental account because they were not able to cash the original rent checks that were supposedly never received by them in the first place.
Again we went to the RSO to discuss the situation, and this time spoke with a "manager." In all my life I have not met with anyone who was so rude! She was inexplicably aggressive and continually cut us off, to dismissing our complaint, before we could even finish telling her what the problem was. Again, without letting us finish, she told us that MAC had never lost a check and therefore there was no way she could reverse the return check fee. Additionally she told us that SHE was the only person in the office who had access to the drop box (contradicting what the accountant told us in our previous meeting). Not satisfied with her lack of logic, we continued to debate the issue until she cut us off again and said she would adjust off half the fee, but refused to discuss the problem any longer because it was clear we were just trying to "scam" our way out of paying a legitimate fee.
Before leavening I calmly told her that regardless of the fee issue, the real problem I had with our meeting was the completely antagonistic attitude she had with us from the moment we walked through the door. In response she said "well, I'm sorry you feel like that, but this is my attitude, and it is not going to change." I couldn't believe my ears. Completely unprofessional.
Now MAC has a new illogical policy. They refuse to give receipts of payment for rent, and they require that you only deposit rent checks in the drop box as they are prohibited from accepting them in person in the office. This completely blows my mind. After the check debacle, my roommate and I now pay rent with money orders, and it is completely unacceptable to not receive a receipt for what is in essence a non-refundable, non-traceable cash payment. When I demanded that I receive some sort of documentation that the money orders were delivered (because after all, things put in the drop box have a tendency to go missing), the employee told me that was impossible, and not to worry because only one person had access to the drop box (as he pointed to neither the accountant or the manager, but to someone I had never seen before).
Please, if you value not having your money stolen and your honor insulted, take our account as a cautionary tale, and run in the opposite direction as far as you can away from MAC Property Management!
