Great place to call home ( over a year ago )

Reviewed by: Anonymous
Many years ago my wife, Dottie, and I learned about Somerset Lakes Apartments through my boss, Fran Sonday and wife Lois. In 1996 when we sold our home in Knollton Heights, we did not consider a site other than here. When Dottie died in ’99, I merely moved from a 3 bedroom unit (7501 Somerset Bay B) to a 2 bedroom unit ½ block away (7459 A). Thus I’ve lived here for more than a decade.
I would say Somerset Lakes deserves its reputation as a premier rental in the county. Chris Harding has been an outstanding leader through out. Services have been excellent, even with predictable changes in personnel over the years, the quality has not diminished.
For me one of the most redeeming features has been the availability of exercising!
At first I didn’t appreciate being “gated”, but drive through traffic is not missed. With changes in trash pick-up, we cope. In brief I wouldn’t like anywhere else.
Sincerely,
Jim Shanks

Staying at this property is really a good value. When you check other properties that charge the same or more, the square footage is what gives Somerset Lakes the edge along with the fact that all of the views are lakeviews and the property is generally rather quiet. Be careful however, this used to be a senior citizen only community and many of them are still there...as grumpy as ever!!! Not all of the older residents are this way but it is obvious that many of them, being stubborn, didn't want to move but didn't welcome the property changing over to a non-age restricted property. Being in a secure and gated community is a real plus and the fact that is is somewhat hidden is antoher benefit.
Now for the not so good part; The property is owned by AIMCO, a large corporate entity with little regard for renters. They are not very helpful and overall seem to do a lot of price adjusting so the unit rates vary quite a bit. They also don't advise as to what the rates will be after the special is over so don't be surprised if at the end of your lease (as was the case with me) you get a whopper of a surprise when your rent sky rockets. If you are prepared for the normal rate going in, you will be fine so just enjoy the luxury of the special and brace yourself for real life at the end of your lease. They do come to you 90 days before the end of your lease with the new rate so you will have time should you decide to move.
The office staff is really nice EXCEPT for the manager; she is a real jerk. Most of the residents don't care much for her. She has a nasty attitude and her overall concern for the residents (except for the old timers who have lived there 10 year or more) is poor. She is very deceptive so be advised to talk to the other girls. Natasha and Renee are great ladies to work with
