Hopefully Objective But Totally Honest

Their website shows (or showed) yuppie couples frollicking in roomy, sunlit apartments. The reality is much less pleasant. In the years when I lived there, I often came home to find groups of teenagers hanging out in the lobby or lounging near the entrance. There was an overnight security guard for a short time, but he or she was either confined to or chose to remain in the office. I never saw a secuity guard walking the premises. Parking is a nightmare: the spaces are tiny and few, and free parking was being phased out at the time I decided to move. The "covered parking" is ten or so spaces beneath the same corner of the building where the dumpsters are kept (they don't turn the air conditioning on until quite late in the spring, so the smell of garbage will be a real problem if you live on the back side of the building and have to open your windows). The building is old and there are frequent problems with leaky pipes. I actually had a crack open up in the ceiling and water shoot out of another crack in a wall. Ceiling tiles in the hallways and above the "covered parking" were often out of place, especially in winter when the pipes often failed. Among other incidents worth noting were the uncommonly frequent fire alarms and the uncomfortable number of power and water outages. Last of all, when I moved out, I was promised the return of my deposite within six to eight weeks. It took over three months and several calls to the the property manager and ultimately to the president of the company that now owns the building. I would not recommend Avondale Overlook at half to price, and I urge you to drive to the place at night or on a weekend and see as many of these things as you can for yourself. Perhaps the new management really does want to make things better. I for one would wait until they get it right.
