Great and horrible, but mostly very good ( over a year ago )

I relate to both the glowing and the angry comments posted here.
First the good: Forest Hills is a very affordable place for single people or people with small/young families. The grounds are pretty with flower beds and young and old trees, a community garden (you pay 50 for your own plot), and play structures throughout for kids. There is a lot of space for kids to run around, and there are a lot of kids. I am protective of my kid and feel safe in the neighborhood. Unlike other places I've lived, many people know neighbors' names and there lots of "stop and chats" if you are into that. I think a lot of people move here because it has a friendly reputation and because of the idea that each person owns a part of the co-op. The maintenance has always been very good. The grounds as well as the buildings are kept up very well. The neighborhood has a lot of international families, many nationalities are represented as well as diverse Americans. Around my court, there are teachers, a doctor, grad students, a carpenter, and a U of M lecturer. There is a lot of class and economic diversity.
The not-so-good/BAD: The office staff is pretty much what I hate about this place. It is quite horrible. Basically, management talks down to everyone and treats people like they are idiots. When they make a mistake (which is often), they do not admit it. (Though they seem to be the challenged ones.)The woman that you meet just as you come in is nice, and sometimes I wonder how she puts up with the managers. My thoughts about them oscillate between wondering if they passed third grade, or if they are the rudest people in the world, or if there is some strange gas in their building that makes them socially inept. The less interaction with them the better.
Other comments: I was not happy with the neighborhood school, so we chose a private school. With two adults working and the lower co-op rent, that was not a problem for us. It may be for a bigger family, though.
All that said, the grounds and the town homes, are great, the maintenance is above average, and it is affordable and most people are friendly. I have recommended this place to friends and some of them have come to live here. They like it, but we all complain about the people in the office.

What a great place! Lived there for over 20 years, raised my family there now my kids are living there with their small children. One of the reasons Forest Hills has been able to maintain it's appeal is the fact that it has been managed by the same people for over 30 years. The entire staff are vested in making Forest Hills one of the most affordable, and well managed housing communities in Ann Arbor. You cannot go wrong. I would still be there today if it weren't for the fact that I need a place all on one floor. My thanks go out to Claudia, Cheryl and the entire staff of Forest Hills Cooperative.

I resided in a large townhouse at Forest Hills Cooperative for over 12 years. It is a wonderful place to raise a family. My husband and I enjoyed the country atmosphere while at the same time being close to the City. The rent was very reasonable, the townhouses spacious and the community friendly and caring. The staff is exceptional and always there to lend a hand, the maintenance services are outstanding. I would recommend Forest Hills to anyone who wants a great place to call home. The only reason we moved was because we purchased our own home. We will always cherish our memories and the friends we made at Forest Hills Cooperative.
