Our Review for Medical Center Court Apartments

Medical Center Court Apartments can be found on Maiden Lane, one mile out from the epicenter of Downtown. There are multiple bus stops leaseholders can take to get around town or they can hitch a ride from the Ann Arbor Amtrak nearby. The complex is a great spot for residents who attend the University of Michigan to find housing. Yogis can take classes at Take Five Yoga across the street. Reviews criticize the noise levels of the area and dislike that residents share utility costs with everyone in the building. Some rave about the amazing location, the helpful staff, and the well-maintained grounds.

Overall, this place has several decent points. It is close to the University of Michigan, the building feels safe, and the grounds are clean (except for the abandoned lot next to the complex). However, there are some serious issues, which bother me, and I would have moved out if I had time to find another place and to arrange a move.

First of all, for the lack of a different word, the utilities situation is strange. As a part of your utilities, you will pay for gas: not for your own use, but for the whole building. For instance, I have been out of town for a couple of months (obviously, I have not used any gas), but each month I pay a utilities bill of appr. $ 70 (the majority of it is gas). In winter, this situation will be worse. Previously, they had a $ 90 cap for the utilities, but I just received a letter saying that the cap will be cancelled. Although the letter states that they do not anticipate a significant increase in utility cost, it is not true. I expect that the utilities bill will go to appr. $ 130-140 per months, at least it was around this amount last winter (luckily it was capped at that point). I find this amount really high for my small 1 bedroom, considering that I did not turn on my gas heater too frequently.

Second, I join the comments of other ex-residents: 1. the level of noise is high; 2. parking is a problem sometimes, especially in the evening on the weekends; 3. the condition of the building is nice, but my windows leaked several times; 4. the management is not very responsive to requests: the office lost two of my service requests. However, the maintenance crew is very friendly, and they always did a good job on fixing stuff.

I am suprised by the other reviews for this community. I have lieved here for over a year and have found it to be a quiet community with a very helpful front office staff and great maintenance. I have recommended this place to friends!
