Review for Roselawn Terrace Apartments

I would not recommend Roselawn Terrace apartments in Starkville, MS (near Mississippi State University, MSU) to ANYONE - not even my worst enemy... I have lived in a lot of apartments before and this is by far the worst experience I have ever had!
It all started during the move in day. The apartment's rent was cheap comparing to others but as they say free cheese is only in a mouse trap, and later I found out the same goes for this deal. The first day I was moving in, the apartment has not been cleaned at all. It looked like the last tenant living there simply carried all his stuff out and left piles of dirt in every room and kitchen. Unwashable stains on the carpet, carpet itself looking like it hasn't been replaced in 10 years, dirt in the kitchen, sink and bathroom are simply disgusting. I thought the smell of the apartment was simply because it was so dirty since it wasn't cleaned, but no - it stayed there for all the time I lived there and later I got so used to it that the people that would visit me would be able to smell it immediately, and I wouldn't. I am not even mentioning the minor problems - can't take a step without floors squeaking, absolutely no sunlight inside (windows lead to the sidewalk where others walk constantly), air conditioning and fridge working like crap, roaches and big ant problems - have to get used to hiding your food because piles of ants WILL get it...
The apartment is only half the story. The landlord, Ken Daniels, is the biggest scum I have every met. I always knew that landlords were a different breed of people, but this one turned out to be something else. Throughout the whole time I was there, he never ever fixed anything I asked him. The first day he didn't clean the apartment - I had my friends come over and help me bring all the shit out. The outside door was not completely closing for years. I would confront him about it (if I could catch him - never answers phone calls), and he would say "yeah yeah, I'll take a look at it", only to disappear so that he wouldn't have to see me again! These are not living conditions. I remember once he and cops knocked on my door late at night because somebody was being loud and started asking me questions like I was the one responsible! When I would leave the place for a week or two he would turn off my hot water without telling me and when I would get back he would keep it turned off and I would have no idea why there's no water...
When it was time to move out, my father came over to help me move and clean the place because we were supposed to get our deposit back. I was moving out 2 months before my contract expired, but I found a person that would not only replace me for these 2 months, but would also sign a contract for the next year. Not only would that work for me, I thought, but that would bring the landlord another client for a whole year. My father and me cleaned FOR HOURS the shit that was there for years trying to make it spotless so that we'd get our deposit back and the new guy would gladly take the apartment - there was no reason Ken Daniels was supposed to not give back the deposit.
The new guy came over, looked at the apartment, said "I am taking it immediately since the price is good and it looks decent, where do I sign?". We call the landlord (one of the only times he actually picks up the phone), and he comes over. As soon as we confront him about the deposit (that he promised several days before), he starts yelling out of nowhere at me and my father! He screams "What fucking deposit? This place looks like shit! There is no deposit, I will show them more of my apartments now and not only will you not get your deposit, but you will have to pay me for 2 more months!!". We were left speechless. Here was a guy that was taking advantage of the situation, getting everything out of it - he would end up getting the new guy, keeping our deposit, and making us pay for the rest of 2 months. He later ended up convincing my new guy to move in to his more expensive apartment unit next door, and kept our deposit. I had to pay for my last 2 months of not living there.
The reason I took the time to create a username on this website and write this big review is to tell the people to avoid scum like this. Starkville is a wonderful town with many apartments. Do NOT waste your time looking at Roselawn Terrace! I promise you you will regret it sooner or later - the apartments are complete crap, and Ken Daniels, the person that takes care of it, is a dishonest waste that you've never met before. You are much better off finding a place that is more decent and the same price...
