Building shows it's age, but is not close to falling apart. Superintendent is outstanding, will work 24 hours a day if he has to. He's easy to talk to and very nice, incredibly organized and great handyman. Even plows the parking lots himself in the winter! The staff in charge of interviewing tenants though, watch out! Bunch of older women who think the world should bow at their feet. Once you get through the interveiw, you don't really have to deal with them so it's not too bad.
Two elevators, usually one consistently is working. They also show their age occasionally. Neighbors that smoke don't do anything to cover it up, it leaks into the hall or in through your windows. Most people are really nice, but there's always a few in the crowd that are a tad bit snooty.
Having a doorman is really great, and it's very safe even for the building's location. Doors are locked at night when doorman leaves.
The mailboxes are tiny tiny, so even big envelopes are marked as "packages" and put in a cabinet that is locked. The doorman can open it with his key and get your package - but if you wait til after his shift is over, then you can't get it til the next day. Safety-wise, my only issue is that the parking lot is a bit creepy at night. There is parking in the front, but those spaces fill up fast. On the side there's alternate side parking, and the police don't hesitate to hand out tickets.
The front of the building doesn't get a lot of noise, but the back faces another complex where the people have a tendency to be noisy.
All the units are suffering a bit, but mostly the landlords keep them in okay condition.
I like to keep to myself so the closeness of the apartments (sharing hallways, some people share porches, can see into your windows from their porches, etc) can be a little much. Also the pipes in the shower on the other side of my bathroom wall are really loud. You get used to it though.
Although the doorman is a great addition, they sometimes are too jumpy to help you when you don't need it. But is that really a bad thing?
Building doesn't allow pets, but several people (maybe half the building) hide cats or fish. A few people have therapy dogs. As long as you're responsible and they don't bother anyone, no one really will go after the tenants with animals. I wouldn't, at least. For most of the older inhabitants, those animals are the only family they have.
Laundry room (everyone in the hall shares one washer and one dryer) is usually in working order, has hours from 8am-10pm. It's actually fairly easy to find laundry time, even though you share with the whole floor. Some floors are strict about the hours (will leave notes if you're over your time by even five minutes) but then other floors don't care at all.
Overall it's an okay place. People, though sometimes snooty, are generally nice and easy to live with. Although I have personally only been here a year, I've had friends and family living here over the course of the last ten years so I've seen a lot of the changes.

Also, grocery service - pull up the the front with your groceries and the doorman will get a cart, unload them for you, and watch them while you go park your car. There's a rec room, usually empty and quiet. Cement porches on each apartment. Only the studio apts share porches with their neighbor in the front of the building; in the back of the building, the one bedroom apts share. Some have screened in porches. Trash chutes in the hallway, so there's no taking out the trash.
