An Albany Original

I lived at the Knickerbocker Arms 5 years until I bought my own home. I relocated from NYC and the landlords, Kim and Charles Winslow were in the process of renovating their building at that time. I found them to be warm, helpful, interesting landlords. They were always responsive to my needs and I never had a problem with them. There were, however, a few people in the building who did not abide by the rules and they had problems. The landlords are sticklers for safety. They do not want tenants giving away the front door codes, etc. This is a relaxed building that is in some ways like a dormitory. Prior to the Winslows buying the building, however, it was a drug haven. They cleaned up the building and the block. There are several elderly people in the building whom the landlords take care of. The rest of the tenants are mostly younger college students or interns. During holiday times, the Winslows used to have catered get-togethers and the place was quite hospitable. I always felt extremely safe in the building. Parking can sometimes be a problem but that is due to the location. I am a middle-aged person but enjoyed living there and met many interesting people. I don't think that an honest, law-abiding person would have a preblem there. However, you should like animals because there are occasionally a dog or cat lolling around in the lobby. Also, the landlords are straight-shooters and don't mince words so they will be honest with you if you break the rules (which are not unreasonable rules). It is truly an Albany original!
