I have been living in a little over a year and I absolutely love it. It was my first apartment after I graduated college and not what I expected living in Manhattan coming form the suburbs of Connecticut. The complex is quiet, the neighbors are friendly and the apartments are spacious. The grounds are well-kept and serene. Not to sound too cheesy but it’s like an urban oasis. I gladly renewed my lease, the rent (which is still cheaper than downtown) is worth the peace of mind I have coming home. It is great complex for recent graduates, families and professionals, and very conveniently located (near the 2/3 and the green line).
A great place to live!

The Riverton Houses were built in 1948 by Met Life along with Stuyvesent Town and Peter Cooper Village. It was intended to be the "separate but equal" complex for returning black WWII vets and their families.

The entire complex was purchased by Stellar Management Corp. in August of 2005. Since then, every newly vacant apartment has been gut-renovated with medium-high end stainless steel kitchen appliances, granite counters, new cabinetry and nice tile, bath and shower fixtures. In addition, the electricty has been upgraded as well. The apartments are an incredible value for the current asking price.

While the overall composition of the neighborhood remains predominantly African-American, if you deport yourself in a manner by which you would want to be treated, you will find people are generally nice here. The complex itself is gradually becoming more multicultural as new people move in. I have found it to be the quietest neighborhood in which I have ever lived in Manhattan. (No lie.) The breezes off the Harlem River make sleeping at night a pleasure.

If you like the "downtown scene," get on the 2 or 3 train and be in the West Village in 25 minutes. The train is one long block west of the complex or about a five minute walk. All the essentials like food shopping are quite nearby. Give it a try!
