Move Out Rip-Off ( over a year ago )

Reviewed by: Anonymous
I lived in gov sq. for two years and never had a problem but upon move out i was mailed a bill for over 400 dollars in move out charges (such as 50 bucks for two slats of the vertical blinds missing). If you decide to rent I advise you to take photographs of the property when u move in and when u move out.

When i went to see the apartment as they listed in many sites as 2bedroom & 2 bathroom. While i was asking about the apartment . They told me that they don't have any two bath room units. So i asked that it was advertised onto many web sites. They got very aggrivated. It was a horrible experience. I suggest save yourself & don't rent there.

I've reserved comment on the maintenance and office staff, because I don't feel I have enough knowledge to judge... The rest, however, I can speak candidly about with comfort.

The grounds are extremely well-kept by the staff, and I've never felt unsafe. Those are the positives...

I unfortunately have many negatives to share. When I moved in, I found my (brand new) dishwasher filled up with black, smelly water. The bathtub had black dirt particles in it, and it was nearly impossible to get that cleaned, despite the "new" bathroom. I came home one weekend to find that the roof leaked, and wouldn't you know that the leak was right over top of my TV and home theater system? (Thank goodness for renter's insurance!)

I did have one problem with payments. I was out of town, and I had submitted a check for my rent, and what I figured would be more than enough to cover my utilities. (I did not get a utility bill that month, and haven't since December.) Since I had been out of town, I only had my heat set at the bare minimum. (I hadn't realized I was responsible for a share of everyone else's gas bill as well!) In the meantime, since they had called and left a message about non-payment of rent (this was the 7th, and I left the original check with them on the 30th of the previous month, so I didn't comprehend the non-payment part), I assumed I hadn't paid enough on utilities and I dropped an extra check for $75 (more than enough i thought) to cover the balance. I came home to find 2 eviction notices on my door, with my original rent check returned, along with an explanation that they do not accept "partial" payments. (They did, however, have no problem cashing the $75 check I left them BEFORE they had a MONEY ORDER for the rest of my rent, which I incidentally took them the next day. So much for partial payments not accepted!) I am a law student, and am well aware of my rights as a tenant, and I know that those rights were not respected with regards to all the eviction notices! Eventually once they took my check out of the dropbox, it all went away, but it was very irritating to be threatened when I didn't do anything wrong!

I find that the biggest issues for me are parking and noise. I think it's ridiculous to have SO MANY parking spaces, and yet they are ALL full after hours. It's amazing how if I get home at 6 a.m., there's plenty of parking because the party guests have all gone home by then. The subject of parties leads me to the noise. People have NO RESPECT for neighbors. Not everyone here is an undergrad who wants to listen to a bunch of drunken people blasting music, screaming, and running around outside at 2 a.m. I realize that people have a right to have guests and to have parties, but so many people here just don't respect those around who may have no desire to partake in such activities!

Overall, I have not had a TERRIBLE experience, but it hasn't been satisfactory enough for me to stick around. For an undergrad student who likes to be at the center of things, this would be a great place to live; it just didn't suit me well. I would caution any longer-term or grad/professional students about the dorm-like atmosphere. Otherwise, it's not entirely awful.

I almost feel bad for Governours Square. It's a larger complex therefore they receive three times as many reviews as other communities. I have lived here for a pretty long time now and although I had some very minor issues when I moved in, they took care of them immediately. The office staff as well as maintenance has always been very nice and prompt since I moved here over a year ago (i just signed another 6 month lease and then will be buying a home, otherwise i would've stayed longer) and I havent had any issues with noise or parking. I felt I needed to write something to give their reviews a boost. And no, I'm not a part of their staff. lol. Governours Square is in a convenient location and has some very nice apartments at an affordable price. They have some gorgeous remodeled homes they've started on recently also. The flowers are really pretty and Ive met some great friends/other residents here. People need to stop complaining because they have one bad experience. This can happen anywhere, find something better to do with your time guys.

I have been in here for a year and we will lease again. After reading other comments I could not believe that I was living in the same place with them. The reason to that bad raitings in my opinion is; the only ones raitings are the ones that have bad experiences. I have no noise problems here. Air condition is working ok but they are completely changing it next week anyway. There is always parking space for your car but if you arive at 2:00 am you might not be able to park in front of your apt. Pools are great and clean. Enviroment is clean mostly. Apartments are old but clean. I especially like my apt since it has its own outside gate and a large balkony. There are ants around but they only comes when you have food on your carpet. otherwise they don't ever come. I like them anyway:) Never had a problem with rent office.

I have been living in Columbus all my life and I know where to rent and where not to rent. This part of town is close to campus and is also not horrible when it comes to crime. The apartments are 30 years old and they will tell you that. The age comes along with some problems with the appliances. Our gas heater uses so much gas to get to where it is warm. Other than that they are replacing the kitchen appliances. Our neighbors are unbelievably rude... they don't seem to care who moves in here as long as someone does. The maintenence person who always comes to my apartment is very nice and has gone out of his way to make my apartment more comfortable. Overall, for the price it's not bad! However I am not going to renew my lease, I am willing to pay the price for a nicer apartment.

Its not a terrible place. Inside the apartments/townhouses are nice, but I think some of the leasing office employees are not so much and i believe they try to rip ya off too. But overall, its not terrible

I currently live at Governours Square. My lease is over in August and I will not be renewing, because they will be upping our lease if we renew, and because of reasons I will list below.
1) Loud neighbors! I live in a 2nd floor apartment and the neighbors below us are very loud. They moved in a few months ago, so things werent loud when we first moved in. The floor is paper thin. I can hear them yelling at each other, hear their tv, hear them slam closets and doors... basically everything.
**also these loud neighbors are not college students! I noticed people saying only college students are loud! Not true! These people are a ~40 year old couple! **
We complained to leasing about the loud neighbors and they wont do anything about it. "We can send them a note to be quiet..." but I am not sure if a note was ever sent. The lady in leasing that we talked to seemed annoyed with us for complaining about the neighbors and not annoyed with the neighbors themselves.
2) My car got broken into. I have lived in many places in Columbus and had the same car and it has never gotten broken into anywhere else.
3) The parking sucks! There are not enough spaces for all the cars. A lot of people have to park in the roads and other places. Also there is no parking at my particular building. I have to park at another building.
4) Many people living in one apartment. Not only is this possibly illlegal, but it causes high noise levels.
5) Old kitchen. We have a kitchen with very old appliances. G. Square has started putting in new kitchens, but not in our apartment! Our dishwasher does not really work but they will not give us a new one.
6) Smokers! The people below us smoke and the smoke comes up through the floorboards. Also almost all the people in the units around us smoke, so when we have windows open smoke drifts into our apartment. This is bothersome for a non-smoker like me. Plus the ciggarette butts all over the place makes the complex look messy.
7) Maintenance takes forever to show up. If you have an emergency, they usually come the same day but usually a few hours after you call. If you have a non-emergency, they take days. We waited almost a week once for them to come fix our dishwasher.
8) Getting out of the complex at certain times is very difficult! There is only one way out of the complex (onto Kenny road) and sometimes traffic is so bad that it takes forever just to get out. Going left is extremely difficult at almost any time of the day.
I will say some positive things though. I really like how at G. Square all the units have porches and balconies. It is nice to have our own outside area, where we can enjoy the nice weather. I like that maintenance doesnt do "surprise inspections" like some other complexes do. Plus the pools are pretty nice, and they keep the landscaping here well manicured.

I am pretty dissatisfied with G/S but for students getting their first apartment, it may just be the right place for you.
First of all it is convenient to OSU and on the bus line if you are attending Columbus State.
I am in one of the newly remodeled one and it is nice but smaller than I would like. (My furniture was bought when I had a fairly good sized house.) I don't like not having w/d hookups but there are several large laudry rooms.
Also has weight room, several pools, and a basketball court.
The neighbors are noisy - always having parties and gatherings and the smokers in my building have basically left a layer of butts as thick as mulch in the front. I don't think any of those things would bother student tenants.
The price is about average for apartments in the area, I think.

Apartment itself was nice tho smaller than I would have liked. Maintenance was responsive and fixed most things in a couple days.
I am not a college student so didn't appreciate the noisy neighbors. My upstairs neighbor like to smoke on the porch and drop their cigarettes in the area of my front door. Make sure you see the apartment that you will be living in to access the neighborhood before signing a lease.
Management wasn't as nice and helpful as they used to be. Could not get them to tell how much my rent would be to renew my lease until after the deadline so I decided to move elsewhere.

Rent increased $20 the first renewal, then went up $120 if I chose to renew again. Everything is painted, walls, baseboards, etc etc...very cheap looking and any speck of dirt will stick. had several problems with ants, spiders, centipedes, etc. had to have apt sprayed 5 times before they finally called an exterminator (which then the bugs got in and died - leaving me a mess to clean up once a week). Office staff are great, maintenance staff is poor. They do the minimum to keep you quiet and if you want something done you need to be persistent. Rent was expensive (maybe i was paying a higher rent for all the bugs that were living there!!) Try Fox and Hounds across the street???

I lived at Governours Square for three years and they were very helpful with maintenance and the office people were great. I rented one of their remodeled apartments and it was very well priced. You are close to everything you need and OSU.
