I rented at Portage Towers for almost three years. In my 2 1/2 years there, I experienced carpet that looks like it's 25 yrs old, water shut offs frequently, an extremely rude and unprofessional building manager and laundry being stolen out the laundry room. The building manager is very very rude and will litterally yell at tenants until he is red in the face. I dont' think he could act professional if his life depended on it. He yelled at my husband and I on more one occasion. Whenever we went to him with a problem, he acted as if it was his last priority. We were promised that the door trim around all of our doors would be sanded down and re-painted, well, they re-painted but never sanded so you could see all the lines thru, from the previous paint job. Our carpet had MANY stains on it when we moved in and it looked TERRIBLE. It was fraying and coming apart in parts of the closets. We were told they would have it cleaned but that does not help the fraying. We also had black mold ALL OVER our window pains. We were told by the building manager that they would clean it for us, however it is up to us to put in a work order whenever it needs cleaned rather than just remedying the problem all together. I don't feel that it is the tenants responsibility to keep putting in work orders every few months to have a problem fixed that the manager is fully aware is going on. Not to mention all the health problems that black mold can cause. (including respiratory problems and cancer). The windows are made of old school aluminum, which when condensation occurs, it creates black mold. The manager seemed to be unsympathetic to this problem entirely. The managment company that owns Portage Towers has spent much money on fixing up the outside of the building and the main lobby's which do look quite nice. The only problem is that they do not seem to be putting money into new windows, (which will eliminate the black mold problem) or new carpet for the units. I would not recommend Portage Towers, or any other apartments that are managed by the same company to anyone. Especially after I spoke to a few of our neighbors in the building who were having the same problems we were. I have also heard that the managment company themselves post reviews on these websites to make themselves look good.
