Administrative Incompetence

The Good: The apartments are pretty ordinary with sufficient space and usually well-insulated. The grounds are kept well. Being near two UNT bus routes, the buses are usually on time and there is not much of a wait. The rent is ordinary, but not spectacular for what you're getting.

The Bad: The bad in terms of talking about these apartments is tied solely with the management. Bad communication and lack of basic customer service skills make these apartments a hell to deal with.

To start off with, the maintenance is not maintenance at all, but more serves to quickly fix the problem for the five minutes they are there. When our garbage disposal broke, their solution was something akin to beating it with a hammer. Like above, it worked for the few minutes they were there and it broke again. Another problem report was made with the same outcome and the garbage disposal was never fixed.

The management never follows up on anything. In January we asked about the availability of a one-bedroom and were told one would probably be in February. Around February they changed it to March, and March was changed to May. All the while they wanted us to pay a month-to-month lease, which was more expensive than a 6 month lease. The final blow-off came when they said they'd call us when one became available, which never happened. Ironically, although we were looking for a different apartment in their complex, they sent us messages demanding that we give 30 days notice if we were moving. They made us feel very welcomed. Much later, when we got sick of dealing with the management and tried to give them 30 days notice, this magically turned into 60 days.

They also lack basic book-keeping skills. They have tried to evict us twice for mess ups in their office. The first time they completely lost our rent check and posted a note of eviction on our door. We went to the office, gave them another check and were told that the situation was all cleared up now. Both of us work in Dallas during the week, and come back to our apartment during the weekend. The next month we came back up one weekend and this time a letter was tacked inside our apartment saying we hadn't paid for two months of rent and that we needed to be out by that night. Their emergency number went back to a phone in their office and there was no way to contact a manager. We were basically held hostage in our apartment, afraid of a sheriff coming to move our things out.

The next morning when we went to clear up the matter, the office opened late, the girl we talked to talked more of her personal problems than the matter at hand, and all we got was a pithy "I'm sorry" for the whole ordeal. We called back to talk to a manager later in the week to find out the person we talked to the day before didn't work then (that's another big problem with the management- there is an ever-revolving cast of characters working there so one person you talk to one day won't be there ever again). Were told that it was a "preliminary" eviction notice and that they were not really going to kick us out until later, even though the letter they gave us clearly told us to be out by a certain date. I guess their 1 month trial of Quicken expired. They blamed the whole thing on a computer glitch, although that didn't explain the executive decision of throwing an eviction notice in our apartment.

In all this we also found that they had lost the lease we signed, sticking it in with someone of the same last name. Once they took a look at our lease, they realized it was almost up and asked us if we would like to renew like nothing had taken place beforehand.

We come back to our apartment during the summer for relaxing on the weekends, but dealing with Ramsgate has made it an exciting guessing game of what will be tacked inside our door this time, or what their office will mess up and blame on us, or if our things will even still be there the next time we come up.

In summary, the apartments are ordinary. There's nothing very spectacular about them, but dealing with the management is torture. Cross them off your list.
