Guess It Could Be Worse...

The day I moved in there were live roaches as well as their carcasses all over the apartment, including the kitchen drawers and cabinets. I could've cried, didn't unpack everything and slept in my car. The exterminator can only come once a week and it took two months to get rid of them. I talked to a lot of people in the building and haven't met one that has had a roach problem, so I am assuming that it was due to dirty neighbors. To be fair, I haven't really seen them since.

The apartment itself is really nice and spacious - we have the "hardwood floors", but apparently VA law mandates that 80% of your apartment has to be carpeted. Soo, we bought a carpet to keep the neighbors downstairs from complaining about our shoes.

Washer/dryer in the apartment, but the building has coin operated ones in the basement. Never used the pool, but the "renovated fitness center" needs lots of work. Machines are broken and there are only a few heavier weights to use since people probably walk off with the 10lb-ers.

The utilities system is probably a sham. You have to pay an admin fee, water, sewage, gas and electricity.

Considering that the rent+util. is still relatively low for the area, my place is really spacious and the bugs are gone, I don't mind living in this place so much anymore. The lobby/elevators/hallways/gym/pool is pretty ghetto, but it's easy to deal with. I've never felt unsafe there.

The guy who leases the apts and his secretary are really friendly and helpful. Most of the staff is generally helpful, except for two who go out of their way to inconvenience you. Unfortunately, they're the ones I see the most.

I'd recommend this place as a last resort - particularly since they'll let you sublet it out. If you can find better, I'd splurge a bit and find a nicer building.
