If you want to know what's going on in the neighborhood, just sit in your apartment, mind your own business, and hear it all as loud as if your neighbors were in YOUR apartment. I can hear all my neighbors come and go (pulling in, locking their car doors, coming up the stairs, jiggling the keys in the lock, shutting - which sounds like slamming - the door...), as well as hear all conversations that occur outside.
