A Decent Place To Live

I have lived here about 2 1/2 years. When I came here, I had just travelled from Washington state and needed a place right away. This was the nicest apartment I could find for the price, and I really got my money's worth! The manager at the time was sick and unable to work, so the maintenance crew was running the office. Not knowing me at all, they virtually bent over backwards to get me in, even going so far as to call me while I was still looking at other properties to let me know that they had a unit suddenly come available. I had to take it "as is" but they did their best to remove carpet stains before I moved in. Since then, I have witnessed a handfull of move-outs from my building, and each time the maintenance crew updated the plumbing, replaced the carpet, and gave each unit a fresh coat of paint.
It is very quiet in this neighborhood, and the units are reasonably sound proof. My apartment is the only one in the building from which you can hear people going up and down the hallway stairs, and then you can only hear it in the living room. I have slept soundly all night, every night.
The maintenance crew are very polite and tidy. I have never had a problem with them, though sometimes they're a little slow to respond to a work order, but they are only two taking care of 88 units. They always respond immediately to an emergency, such as a flood, which, being in a ground floor apartment, I've had to deal with a few, but I've had the good fortune to be home each time and been able to do something about it before the water damaged any of my property.
Parking is fair. Each unit is allowed two parking spaces, which are not assigned. One vehicle may park next to the building while the other must be parked around the center island, which stretches the length of the property. That is also where guests are to park. Nobody ever has to walk far to get to their car.
This is a very safe and quiet community. While the neighborhood outside the parking lot might be labeled "ghetto," I have always felt comfortable day or night. I often walked alone around the parking lot perimeter for exercise in the evening and early morning when it was still dark. I have never had a problem. That is not to say there hasn't been any excitement around. There was a drug issue in one unit in my building, but that was delt with immediately and the tenants removed. There has been grafitti on the dumpsters, but that was also removed immediately. This property is corporately managed, and the owners have no interest in letting it become a project. Police occasionally make an appearance, but it is mostly for show. I remember one complaint for noise, but that was reported by an unhappy tenant who did not first ask the offenders to quiet down. No one else in the entire complex heard a thing.
The manager in place when I moved in has recently retired, and I have heard complaints about the new manager. There is a lot of unrest in the office recently, and I have been told that rent is going up. At this point, I know I have the best apartment in the region for the price I'm paying. I don't know if that will still be true in six months. If you're looking at the possibility of living here, know that as long as you are a decent, responsible, polite tenant, you will have no troubles. I don't konw what the future holds for this property, but I am appreciative of the efforts of the staff in making me feel at home.
