Two-Faced Landlords - Do Not Rent From Them!

This review is more on the landlords than on the house, although the house has its problems (no water softener, old appliances, crappy linoleum and cupboards, and the carpet wasn't changed before we moved in). The neighborhood used to be decent but now it scares the hell out of us - it's getting pretty seedy.

When repairs were needed, most were done in a reasonable time frame, though some were completely ignored. Robin was always pleasant, which was why it surprised us when suddenly she called and started yelling and insulting us after we cleaned. While we simply did not have the time to clean underneath the appliances (our fault..we were willing to be deducted for that), she started in on the shower stall (which has paint all over it from one of THEIR repairs...and hard water stains that were scrubbed and scrubbed throughout the 5 years we lived there and especially at the end, but to no avail) and about the cat hair. They also found cat pee in a few corners in 2 rooms. I knew about that - my cat just died 2 weeks ago, and he had been sick. However I did everything I could to clean up after him, and I scrubbed and shampooed and spent hundreds of dollars on different remedies to clean up those corners AS THEY HAPPENED. I knew they would be pulling out the carpet at the end, and I expected much of the security deposit to have to cover those problems. I still planned, however, on cleaning the entire place as much as I could.

To my dismay, when we showed up to clean on Tuesday (as I told the landlords we would) they were already there, and had already pulled up the carpet and painted the wall I needed to paint. I received dirty looks from Greg and disparaging comments from their teenage daughter (who dripped paint EVERYWHERE - on countertops, on the linoleum, etc). Robin remained pleasant, two-faced as she is. We spent the rest of the day scrubbing and cleaning. It is true, we hadn't vacuumed in 2 weeks or done much other than pack and try to get through our regular schedules (I work full time as well as go to school full time). However, when Robin called me to ask if we had completed the cleaning and I informed her we had, she started insulting me about the filthiness of the place and how we must have never vacuumed or scrubbed or done anything in the entire 5 years we lived there. She said there was cat hair everywhere (yeah, there was...she came a DAY EARLY) and that it was the worst duplex they've ever seen. I started getting upset and was about to cry, because I had been dealing with the loss of my baby, as well as having had a bad accident the day before, but she continued on, was completely insensitive when I mentioned the reasons why (my cat was sick and DIED) and made me feel that it was a good thing my baby had died.

Now I take full responsibility for the mess that my cat left. I am not denying that the place was filthy when they entered it a day earlier than they were supposed to (WITHOUT OUR CONSENT!!) but to insult us and judge us based on what they found is absolutely ridiculous. I left a note asking them to not contact me again, but when I showed up today to let the professional cleaners in to finish the job, I started walking away, but Greg just had to yell after me more insults. I had had it. I've had the worst 2 weeks of my life, everything has gone wrong, and he had to add insult to injury. Rather than act like the adult I am, I got mad and started swearing at him, which was stooping to their level of juvenile actions.

They could have gotten their point across about requiring further cleaning without all the insults and the insensitivity. I even told them to keep the security deposit. They refused, because they pride themselves in giving the deposits back to their tenants. Well, if they don't want it, then it is their problem! We've done everything we can, and we did not live in filth as they said. The past two months I've been dealing with a 20 year old sick cat and doing everything I can to keep up with my responsibilities as well as clean up after him, medicate him, etc (before I finally had to put him down). I've had other personal emergencies as well. I am not avoiding personal responsibility for the state of the house, but they acted completely unprofessional and juvenile with their insults and slurs.

I would advise against anyone (especially if you have pets or children) in renting a place from them. They seem pleasant at first, but in the end if something happens that they don't like, the claws come out. Very unprofessional, uncaring, insensitive, and boorish people.
