In 1830, the National Road (Route 40) was diverted to run through Indianapolis. In 1847, Indianapolis completed its railroad, the first to have all its lines meet at a central station. That accomplishment earned the city the name “The Crossroads of America.” And in 1909, Indianapolis built the Motor Speedway and held the first Indy 500 race in 1911.
Today five interstate highways connect Indianapolis to the rest of the country. In its downtown area, a “people mover” serves the Indiana University School of Medicine and its various hospitals. The Indianapolis public transit system is known as “IndyGo.”
At the center of downtown, on the site once intended for a Governor’s Mansion, is Monument Circle, with the nation’s first memorial to war veterans, the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, generally recognized as the symbol of Indianapolis. Action Duckpin Bowl and Atomic Duckpin Bowl, a mile and a half from center city, are a pair of vintage bowling alleys, one with eight lanes and 1930s décor, the other with seven lanes and 1950s ambience. Golfers can choose from about 25 courses, including Brickyard Crossing, a four-hole course on the grounds of the Speedway.
For sports fans, there are the Indians minor-league baseball, the Pacers NBA team, the Indiana Fever WNBA team, the Colts, winner of Super Bowl XLI, and the Indiana Ice, a Tier 1 hockey club. Indiana Downs, 21 miles away, offers Thoroughbred racing April – June and harness racing July – October. These are many reasons why newcomers will love Indianapolis. The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis is a quadrennial competition and 17-day festival to support young violinists. Black Expo Summer Celebration is an 11-day event held each July to highlight the artistic, cultural and economic accomplishments of African-Americans.
