A real Southern charmer, the “Queen City” was named for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England, in 1769. It began at the juncture of two Native American trading trails, which might explain why it became a magnet for business and has grown into one of the nation’s largest banking centers.

The prestigious Myers Park, filled with old Southern estates, was home to the founder of Duke University, James Buchanan Duke. North Davidson, or NoDa, underwent a renaissance in the mid-1980s and is now known for its galleries and performance venues.
