Our predecessors have set a high standard, and our admiration for their many contributions to our campus and society grows with each passing day.
Our shared vision for the university can be put simply—to be the place where we so educate and inspire students that they will leave and contribute in major ways to society, realizing that their Richmond education played a key role in enabling their achievements. We look forward with confidence, knowing the University of Richmond has been uniquely positioned to offer its students an unparalleled experience, distinguished by its discovery-based curriculum, abundant opportunities for student research and state-of-the-art resources. We are already recognized as one of the nation's finest private institutions, but we are constantly striving to surpass even our own highest ambitions.
In the coming years, we will focus on providing our students access to faculty who are both outstanding teachers and renowned scholars, an array of innovative interdisciplinary learning opportunities and an inspirational campus environment. With hearty thanks to the efforts of our predecessors, we embark on our next 175 years with conviction and enthusiasm. Our momentum is surging, and we welcome your participation. The University of Richmond, ranked by college guidebooks as one of America's premier private universities, traces its roots to 1830 when Virginia Baptists opened a seminary for men. The seminary soon added a program for literary studies and was incorporated as Richmond College in 1840.
During the Civil War, the university was used first as a hospital by Confederate soldiers and then as a barracks for Federal troops. By the end of the war in 1865, the university was virtually bankrupt. In 1866, James Thomas donated $5,000, a major gift at the time, to re-open the school and continue its academic mission.
The university opened the T.C. Williams School of Law in 1870, one of the oldest law schools in the state. The school has a proud tradition of producing alumni who have helped shape law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In 1894, the school's sports teams began calling themselves the Spiders after a local sportswriter described one of the baseball team's players as having long arms and a wild pitch like a "spider." Richmond is the only college team in the country with a spider as its official mascot.
In that same year, the university elected as president Frederic W. Boatwright, a 26-year-old professor who remained in office for 51 years. In 1914, Dr. Boatwright led the move from downtown Richmond to the university's current location: a 350-acre tract of land in the West End of Richmond that was then the site of an abandoned amusement park. The suburban property was noted for its rolling hills, central lake and soaring pine trees. Today, college guidebooks rate the Richmond campus as one of the nation's most beautiful. Richmond is a place where faculty members inspire a passion for learning, and students are challenged to achieve their greatest potential. Recognized as one of America's premier private universities, Richmond offers demanding undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its schools of arts and sciences, business, leadership studies, law and continuing studies. With fewer than 3,500 full-time students, the latest technology and stellar facilities, the University blends the intimacy of a small college with exceptional academic and cultural opportunities usually found only at larger institutions. Here are just a few of the distinctive features that Richmond has to offer: Synergistic Learning. A Richmond education provides unique synergies between liberal arts, business, leadership and law found at no other university in the nation. Students with interests spanning a wide range of academic areas thrive here. From our rigorous first-year Core Course to the innovative Quest program, there is a strong commitment to interdisciplinary studies.
• Hands-On Research. The best way for students to learn is by doing. Undergraduates work collaboratively with faculty both in and out of the classroom. Our students solve real-world problems, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to society. The University also offers special funding for undergraduate research projects.
• Richmond Quest. All learning begins with a question, a premise, a curious mind. Every two years, our students are invited to submit a challenging question and rationale for in-depth exploration by the entire campus as part of the Richmond Quest. The student who submits the winning question receives a $25,000 cash prize! The goal of this signature academic program is to generate innovative connections across a wide variety of academic disciplines.
• Science Initiative. Richmond's commitment to providing one of the best undergraduate science programs in the country is evidenced by the $35 million renovation and expansion of its Gottwald Center for the Sciences, as well as an additional $60 million investment in science program enhancements planned over the next 10 years.
